Welcome to our live coverage of the 80th Golden Globes, the stormy (and unofficial) start of the award season.
After a number of internal issues prompted demands for change at the business that produces the event, the Globes were brought back to television last year and were presented by comedian Jarrod Carmichael. He said at the outset of his remarks, “Tell you why I’m here, please. I’m here because I’m black.”
The two best motion film awards given that evening were to “The Fabelmans” and “The Banshees of Inisherin,” respectively, for best comedy or musical and best drama.
The White Lotus and “Abbott Elementary” both took home many awards that night in the television categories, including best-limited series and best comedy series, respectively. The prequel “House of the Dragon” to “Game of Thrones” failed to win the award for best drama series.
Austin Butler won best actor in a drama for his work in “Elvis,” while Colin Farrell won best actor in a motion picture for his humorous performance in “The Banshees of Inisherin.”
The award for best actress in a play went to Cate Blanchett, who wasn’t present at the ceremony, for her depiction of an outstanding conductor in “Tár.” In recognition of her work in “Everything Everywhere All At One,” Michelle Yeoh was awarded Best Actress in a Comedy. K Hua Kwan, one of his co-stars, won the Best Supporting Actor Award for the movie.
Angela Bassett, who won Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” was the first performer to get a significant performance award for a movie from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The semi-autobiographical movie “The Fable Men” directed by Steven Spielberg received the best director prize.
